This is caused by the overproduction of a hormone by the pituitary gland in the brain that in turn controls the amount of cortisol produced by the adrenal glands. The most common type of Cushing’s is pituitary dependent. This disease is very rare in cats, and is more commonly seen in dogs over the age of 6. There are two types of Cushing’s disease Pituitary dependent and Adrenal dependent. It also affects blood pressure, glucose production, electrolyte balance, immune function and fat metabolism.Ĭommon symptoms of Cushing’s disease are: It is a naturally occurring steroid that suppresses the immune system therefore reducing inflammation, pain and swelling.ĭogs need cortisol but too much of it becomes toxic to our dogs.
